After we had equations of a minimal cousin of Longhurst's surface,
it was easy to create images. The highest quality one currently can get
with computer images is by using raytracers. These programs send light rays
for each pixel of the picture, to form a virtual three-dimensional scene.
These light rays are reflected by the objects in the scene, until they hit a
light source. This determines the color value of the pixel.
Below are a few images created with Bryce 4, using VRML models of the Longhurst
surface, created and exported with Mathematica. Click on the images to see a larger
version.
