Elephant head, rare white variation (Pedicularis groenlandica)
I have only once seen a white elephant head like this. So has Nancy Weidman, who provided this photo. One does often see ones that are only slightly pink, but a true white one is very rare. And below is a shot by Joanne Hanson, who saw one in summer of 2019.
And finally I found a nice batch, off the Royal Buffalo Trail, not far from my house! This after 20 years of looking for them! July 19, 2020.
And on July 3, 2021:
And with my new lens on July 11, 2022. Perhaps the single best shot. The dripping noses are the stigmata.
And in July 2022 Matt Wentz and Katie Kreisel spotted a two-toned elephant head that is very striking. This is in Brown Gulch off Tiger Road in Breckenridge.
