South Coyote Buttes

Bill had secured permits for South Coyote Buttes and he drove expertly on the rough road to the Cottonwood Teepees parking area. A short walk then took us to the E side of the main Buttes and we spent several hours wandering around them. Highlights were a spectacular dinosaur footprintm, a wavelike feature we called the South Wave, and twin domes with remarkable half-exposed circles.

I love the dome on the right since it appears that a large cap of whiter sandstone has eroded, showing the rings underneath.

One might call this the South Wave, to differentiate from The Wave, The Fire Wave, and The White Wave. Below is an image by Elaine Belvin of this feature (more of her work is available here).

Above and below: There are many colorful domes in the area.

And plenty of nice flaking Navajo sandstone.

This spectacular dinosaur footprint is just west of the South Wave, which is just NE of the Witches Tower. There were a few other prints in the track. This print is at 36° 57.844”, 111° 59.405”.
It appears to be an example of “otozoum”, the name of the track. See
