The Great Escalante Flood of October 2006
October 2006 saw a 100-year-flood in the region. There are some amazing photos on the web; see especially the web site of Stefan Folias; start with <<http://www.math.utah.edu/~sfolias/e/esc06a.html>>. The debris shown here is at least 15, probably 20 feet above the level of the river which, for our trip, was pretty much normal and easy to cross. The flood appeared to destroy the tamarisks in this area and I don't think anyone is mourning that development.
