Arkansas, Southwest Face
One can gain the area of the Arkie-Tweto col easily from Climax Corner via the west side of Arkansas. Then a final ridge climb gets one to a south summit of Arkansas at just under 13700 ft. The descent down the large face is a longish moderate run. On May 9, 2014, Elke Dratch, Heather Glyde, and I did this on a stormy day. Winds were high and visibility poor, but still the summit was a remarkable place with views of the wild nearby ridges. The return to the car in new cold snow was fantastic.
Here is a view of the west side of Arkansas taken on May 23, 2015, from a ski up Treasure Vault. The SW face is at the far right of the image, with the Arkie-Tweto Col just visible.
On May 22, 2016, Randy Garrison and I booted up the AT col from the east, climbed the S Summit (about 13700), skied the SW Face (icy), climbed back to the col, and skied its E side (good conditions).
The SE side of Arkansas; AT col at left. Main summit at far right. I measured seven feet of snow on the other side of the col, down 500 feet.
Main summit of Arkansas
SW Face of S Summit. The hike to the top along this ridgeline was very pleasant.
