The Vere Gap

wrongway_9.gif

The little gap just right of center is where we came through the side ridge of Vere (often confused with Billy Budd). A possible name for this ridge is Indomitable Ridge, after Billy Budd's ship. The ridge is corniced, but we could sneak through on skier's right (track just barely visible), staying close to the rock. Once into the open slope the angle eased. This was the crux of our traverse, but we had little choice as it was the only easy way through to Houston Pass, near where this photo was taken. The slope is north-facing, so the snow was not too sun-affected. Just visible in the shade at upper left is the upper part of White Chocolate Couloir, which is a sweet ski run.  (Photo: Phil Williams)

In 2015 I visited this spot in summer: a completely different world. See my report on Houston Lake and the climbs of Moby Dick and Proteus.
